Woodfield Road, Schaumburg, IL The field of traumatic stress is at an exciting point in its history with significant advances in the scientific understanding of important factors that influence psychological adjustment following trauma exposure. However, there is a continued struggle to translate this large and growing evidence-base to practice to meet most effectively the needs of those exposed to trauma.
This gap is particularly apparent for the hardest to reach and most vulnerable populations. That is, despite a proliferation of research, we know that most trauma-exposed individuals will not access evidence-based support.
Some of the challenges to broader dissemination and application of existing scientific knowledge include high burden associated with training clinicians; feasibility challenges for patients seeking to engage in evidence-based care; treatment approaches that are complex, burdensome and lengthy; and cross-cultural differences that interfere with treatment acceptability and feasibility in certain populations. To address this need, the 36 th Annual Meeting of ISTSS will seek to provide cutting-edge presentations that highlight the most up-to-date, innovative and novel work being conducted by diverse professionals devoted to the study of traumatic stress across the globe.
Taken together, a bridging of science and practice is necessary to meaningfully enhance recovery and resilience following trauma exposure in diverse settings and the ISTSS Annual Meeting aspires to showcase and promote novel and innovative work in this area. We have already begun to get some questions about our annual meeting.
At present, there is no information to suggest that there is an imminent risk to our annual meeting occurring in Atlanta in November Currently, we have no plans to postpone or cancel the meeting.
We will continue to monitor updates from local, national and global public health authorities regarding the pandemic in the months leading up to the meeting and will continue to keep you informed about the impact of events on the Annual Meeting.
Furthermore, we understand that there may be uncertainty regarding travel plans while information regarding COVID continues to emerge. Lastly, we recognize that many are anxious, stressed and worried in these times of uncertainty. We encourage all of you and your loved ones to do what you can to take care of your own physical and emotional well-being.
We will continue to provide updates as the situation develops and new information becomes available. The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies is dedicated to sharing information about the effects of trauma and the discovery and dissemination of knowledge about policy, program and service initiatives that seek to reduce traumatic stressors and their immediate and long-term consequences.
ISTSS is an international interdisciplinary professional organization that promotes advancement and exchange of knowledge about traumatic stress.
Resilience is the capacity of a system to adapt successfully to challenges. Masten, PhD, LP, discussed decades of resilience research and how it can provide a roadmap for charting a course forward in a time of historic turbulence. In these increasingly perilous times, we are making the recording of her presentation free for everyone across the globe.
The Coronavirus COVID pandemic is a global public health challenge, which is the source of great stress and anxiety for individuals and communities around the world. All four days of the conference are also available via our live video webcast. For almost three decades this conference has examined the evolving knowledge of how trauma affects psychological and biological developmental processes, and how the damage caused by trauma and neglect can be reversed. This year we will explore new frontiers in this work, frontiers that transcend old paradigms of explaining, fixing troublesome behaviors, or administering drugs.
AAST Annual Member Meetings
The study of psychological trauma has been accompanied by an explosion of knowledge about how experience shapes the central nervous system and the formation of the self.
Developments in the neurosciences, developmental psychopathology and information processing have contributed to our understanding of how brain function is shaped by experience and that life itself can continually transform perception and biology.
The study of trauma has probably been the single most fertile area in helping to develop a deeper understanding of the relationship among the emotional, cognitive, social and biological forces that shape human development.
We have learned that most experience is automatically processed on a subcortical level, of the brain; i. Insight and understanding have only a limited influence on the operation of these subcortical processes. When addressing the problems of traumatized people who, in a myriad of ways, continue to react to current experience as a replay of the past, there is a need for therapeutic methods that do not depend exclusively on drugs and cognition.
In this conference we will pay particular attention to physical self-experience, finding one's voice to speak the truth of experience, and the transformative potential of action, mind altering medications and theater.
